Who should attend?

This course is one of three courses that have been developed as part of a training programme to introduce non-graduate Geologists to the world of Geology. The course is aimed at providing a basic understanding of Geological processes and tasks as performed by an assistant or anyone needing a basic understanding of geology. This course will also cover Unit Standards from the Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) to enable Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) during further studies through the MQA and Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO).

Course outcomes.

On completion of the course, the learner will be able to successfully demonstrate:

• Read a plan – Unit Standard 14242.
• Measure and record the dip and strike of a plane – Unit Standard 254499.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the principal mineral groups and their characteristics – Unit Standard 254501.
• Demonstrate an understanding of selected structural features and their characteristics – Unit Standard 254507.

The course is aimed at providing an intermediate level of understanding of Geological processes and tasks as performed by an assistant or anyone involved in geological data acquisition. This course will also cover Unit Standards from the Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) to enable Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) during further studies through the MQA and Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO).

Course outcomes.

On completion of the course, the learner will be able to successfully demonstrate:

• Demonstrate an understanding of the principal rock groups, their origins and characteristics – Unit Standard 254495.
• Assist in the geological mapping of an underground workplace – Unit Standard 254496.
• Prepare borehole core for logging and sampling purposes from core containers – Unit Standard 254535.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the stratigraphy of economic zones within the relevant economic deposit – Unit Standard 254494.

Who should attend?

The course is aimed at providing the recently graduated Geologist with a fundamental understanding of borehole core logging – routine supervision,
borehole logging – as required of a young professional operating in a typical South African mining and/or field exploration environment.

The training material can be applied to most ore deposits where borehole drilling is practised.

The course will focus predominantly on borehole core logging

Course outcomes.

On completion of the course, the learner will be able to successfully demonstrate:

• Manage and control all aspects of environmental, safety and health matters relating to core logging.
• Receive borehole core from the drilling contractor of an acceptable quality, meeting all requirements and standards, as agreed upon in the drilling contract.
• Manage borehole coreyard staff in packing core onto trays, fitting and orientating core, marking core, noting core loss and core gain, marking of core trays.
• Carry out routine borehole core logging, using log sheets, written descriptions of core, pictorial logs, measuring core bedding/fault angles.
• Prepare and mark core for splitting and sampling.
• Splitting of borehole core.
• Plot and document the geological information recorded during borehole drilling and logging.
• Communicate the obtained information.
